Rules & Regulations

Welcome to Råneälvens Norra Kortfiskeområde. All fishing without a valid permit is forbidden. Permits are sold directly by the FVO at ranealven.se.
Children and youth up to 17 do not need a permit to fish for species other than salmon. The family annual permit covers household members registered at the permit-holder's address.

Important — salmon

Salmon fishing is under total protection since 24 June 2024. All salmon must be released. The seasonal closure for 2025 was applied from 23 June 2025; check current FVO notices before targeting salmon.

Closed seasons and size limits

  • Trout (öring): year-round protected — all trout must be released immediately.
  • Grayling (harr): closed 1 March – 31 May. Minimum size 35 cm.
  • Pike (gädda): maximum size 100 cm — fish above that must be released.
  • Zander (gös): slot 40–70 cm — only fish within this slot may be retained.

Methods and gear

  • Standard rule: one rod per angler.
  • When trolling: max 4 rods per boat.
  • When ice fishing: max 4 rods per angler.
  • PowerBait and similar products are forbidden across the whole area.
  • Pike nets are forbidden.
  • Annual permit holders may also set up to 3 fish traps (mjärdar), each marked with name and phone number.

Natural bait — restricted to specific lakes

Natural-bait fishing (worms, maggots, shrimp, fish) is allowed only in these lakes: Valvträsket, Fällviken, Överstbyträsket, Gunnarsbyträsket, Degerselet, Avan, Grundträsket and Stor-Lappträsket. In all other waters, natural bait is forbidden.

Biosecurity — crayfish plague (kräftpest)

To prevent the spread of crayfish plague, boats and fishing gear must be either disinfected or completely dried for at least 48 hours before being used here, if they have previously been used in other waters.

Crayfish fishing

  • Separate crayfish permit required.
  • Starts on the second Thursday in August (14 August in 2025).
  • Max 5 traps per permit.
  • Permitted hours: 17:00 – 23:00.
