Råneälven
Råneälven is a northern Swedish forest river in Norrbotten. The upper river, from Råneträsk down to the municipal border below Mårdsel, is described as Sweden’s largest forest river. Listed species include grayling, trout, salmon, pike and perch.
In Råneälvens Norra Kortfiskeområde, salmon fishing in 2026 is catch-and-release only from 1 June to 31 July. All salmon must be released alive. The season may close from 1 July if fewer than 300 salmon have been counted by Midsummer Day.
Trout is protected all year in Råneälvens Norra Kortfiskeområde. Grayling is closed from 1 March to 31 May. All fishing is prohibited at Brändbergsfallet.
Råneälven has historic fish-counting infrastructure. Fish counters were installed in 2014 to monitor adult trout and salmon migration. Archived counter data exist for several seasons, but this should be treated as historic migration data unless an active feed is available.

Season and key rules
In Råneälvens Norra Kortfiskeområde, salmon fishing in 2026 is catch-and-release from 1 June to 31 July for anglers with a salmon fishing card. All salmon must be released alive as quickly as possible.
If fewer than 300 salmon have been counted by Midsummer Day, salmon fishing may close from 1 July.
Trout is protected all year. Any trout caught must be released immediately.
Grayling is closed from 1 March to 31 May. Grayling has a 35 cm minimum size. Zander has a 40 cm minimum size.
All fishing is prohibited at Brändbergsfallet.
Boats and fishing gear used outside the Råneälven water area must be disinfected or completely dried for at least 48 hours before use.
River character and access
Råneälven changes by stretch.
Between Klingersel and Mårdsel, the river is mainly rapids, pools, necks and currented water, with many salmon lies. The road follows the north bank.
From Mårdsel toward Muorkafors, the river has strong rapid sections, forest-road access and a fly-rod-only stretch.
Around Pakkokroken–Snasko, access is possible from both sides by forest roads with limited drivability. The north side has a road to Snasko. A path leads toward Storkroken, where access is harder.
The Pakkokroken–Snasko area is mainly suited to spin fishing. Upstream, there are good rapid necks for fly fishing. From Snasko toward Mourkafors, the river alternates between calmer sections and rapids.
From Mourkaforsen to Nattavaara, the river is mainly large slow reaches with rapids and currents between them. Some rapid necks are difficult to wade.
Calmer reaches can be deep and are especially relevant for pike. Stronger currents and rapids are more relevant for grayling and salmonid fishing.
Fisheries, stretches and permits
Råneälvens Norra Kortfiskeområde covers the northern part of the Råne River system. It has rules for salmon, trout, grayling, zander, closed areas and disinfection.
Råneälvskortet Norra covers the upper river area from Råneträsk down to the municipal border below Mårdsel, excluding the Mårdsels village area.
Local waters, village areas and private stretches should be checked separately. One permit should not be assumed to cover all practical fishing on Råneälven.
