Tärendöälven is a natural bifurcation in Norrbotten, northern Sweden. It carries water from Torneälven into Kalixälven.

SMHI describes it as Sweden’s best-known bifurcation. About half of Torneälven’s water flows through Tärendöälven toward Kalixälven.

This link matters for Baltic salmon. Research on the Torne–Kalix system shows that water flow and salmon movement connect the two rivers, so they can function as one larger system for salmon migration and genetics.

Local fishing information lists salmon, trout, grayling, pike, perch, whitefish and ide. Salmon is described as the main challenge. Grayling and trout fishing are available along the river stretch.

Rules that change the trip

Tärendöälven is not a normal tributary

Tärendöälven diverts about half of Torneälven’s water into Kalixälven.

Local fishing area matters

Junosuando FVO and Tärendö byavatten are separate fishing areas. Match the permit to the exact water.

Northern access is different

Many places are road-accessible, but the northern part of Tärendöälven has no road running along the river.

Target species

Atlantic salmon is the prestige species. Local fishing information describes salmon as the main challenge.

Grayling and trout are important local salmonid species. Tärendö byavatten says both are available along the river stretch.

Pike and perch are common in local fishing information.

Whitefish and ide are also listed locally.

What to watch

  • Bifurcation — Tärendöälven links Torneälven and Kalixälven.
  • Water transfer — about half of Torneälven’s water flows through Tärendöälven.
  • Salmon link — Torne and Kalix are connected for salmon movement and genetics.
  • Deep narrow water — local descriptions call the river deep and relatively narrow.
  • Difficult banks — access can be awkward in places.
  • Northern section — no road runs along the river there.
  • Species mix — salmon, trout, grayling, pike and perch all matter.
  • Local permit area — Junosuando FVO and Tärendö byavatten are separate waters.

What can go wrong

  • You treat Tärendöälven as a normal tributary.
  • You assume a Torne or Kalix permit covers the exact Tärendöälven water you want to fish.
  • You expect easy roadside access on the northern part of the river.
  • You treat the whole river as fly-only.
