Lögdeälven is a forest river in Västerbotten, northern Sweden, known for salmon, sea trout and grayling. For anglers, the river is best understood through its local FVO areas: Mo-Lögdeå FVO on the lower river, Lögdeälvens FVO on the upper river and Lögdeälven–Västanfjället FVOF farther upstream.

Visit Nordmaling lists two main fishing cards for the river: Mo-Lögdeå FVO for the lower river and Lögdeälvens FVO for the upper river. Västanfjället is a separate upstream FVO for salmon and sea trout.

In the checked local rules, salmon and sea-trout fishing closes around 14–15 September, depending on the FVO. Do not present Lögdeälven as a long autumn sea-trout river unless a specific FVO publishes a later open period.

River character and timing

Lögdeälven is a forest river with salmon, sea-trout and grayling fishing. Guide material describes the season as starting a little into May, after spring-flood turbidity has cleared.

Sea trout is described as especially relevant up to the turn of May / June, mainly on the lower stretches. Salmon becomes more relevant from the turn of May / June and through June.

For Västanfjället, local descriptions point to Storforsen as grayling and trout water, with salmon usually arriving later, around the second half of June or the week before Midsummer.

Rain can raise the river quickly because Lögdeälven has few lakes along its course to buffer flow changes.

Fisheries, stretches and permits

Mo-Lögdeå FVO covers the lower river and is the main lower-river area for salmon and sea trout.

Lögdeälvens FVO covers the upper river and sets rules for salmon, trout, grayling, hook setup and rotation fishing.

Lögdeälven–Västanfjället FVOF covers upstream water where salmon and sea trout are still part of the fishery. Local material highlights Storforsen for grayling and trout, with salmon arriving later in the season.

Rules that change the trip

Fishing ends around mid-September

In Lögdeälvens FVO and Mo-Lögdeå FVO, salmon and trout fishing is listed from 1 May to 15 September. In Västanfjället, salmon / sea-trout fishing is listed from 1 May to 14 September, with a fishing ban from 15 September.

Sea trout is not a long autumn claim

The checked rules close salmon and sea-trout fishing around mid-September. Early season is better supported than a broad autumn sea-trout profile.

Rotation fishing applies in Lögdeälvens FVO

Lögdeälvens FVO lists downstream fishing, no upstream casts, and one-cast / one-step rotation fishing.

Single hooks and no weighted spin-fly

Lögdeälvens FVO rules list single hooks, with a maximum hook gap of 13 mm, and prohibit spin-fly fishing with weight.

Salmon and sea-trout quota

In Lögdeälvens FVO / Mo-Lögdeå FVO, the retained daily catch is a maximum of one salmon and sea trout. In Västanfjället, the retained catch is a maximum of one salmon and/or sea trout per angler per day.

Target species

Atlantic salmon becomes more relevant from late May / June. Guide material describes salmon starting to move upstream around the turn of May / June and being active through June.

Sea trout is central to the lower river. The period up to the turn of May / June is described as good for sea trout, especially on lower stretches.

Grayling is important through much of the open season. Lögdeälvens FVO lists grayling fishing from 1 June to 15 September, and Västanfjället sets a 35 cm minimum size.

Trout is relevant in upper / Västanfjället waters and should be checked against the exact FVO rules.

What to watch

  • FVO — Mo-Lögdeå FVO, Lögdeälvens FVO and Västanfjället have separate rules and open periods.
  • Sea-trout timing — early season is better supported than a long autumn claim.
  • Mid-September closure — checked rules point to fishing ending around 14–15 September.
  • Rotation fishing — one cast, one step downstream in Lögdeälvens FVO.
  • Hook / method rules — single hook and no weighted spin-fly in Lögdeälvens FVO.
  • Rain and water level — the river can rise quickly after rain.
  • Grayling — important enough to plan for, not just a side species.

What can go wrong

  • You buy a permit for the wrong FVO.
  • You plan sea-trout fishing after mid-September without confirming that the FVO is still open.
  • You cast upstream where downstream rotation applies.
  • You bring weighted spin-fly gear where it is prohibited.
  • You treat Lögdeälven as salmon-only and miss sea-trout / grayling timing.
  • You choose an upper stretch expecting the same fishing as the lower river.
  • You ignore rain and arrive after a fast water-level rise.
